Now “on air” for Audi, SEAT, Skoda and VW

BILSTEIN and STREETEC build retrofit air suspension for enhanced driving pleasure

Air suspension systems have been proving their worth in luxury series production vehicles for years, offering above-average comfort and impressive road holding. As one of the leading OE development partners in this sector, BILSTEIN has now been able to draw on its extensive experience during a retrofit project with the renowned tuning company, STREETEC, based in Odenwald, Germany.

“BILSTEIN Performance Airride” is now available for a number of VW Group cars – from the bestsellers Golf V, VI and VII and Tiguan SUV, through the Audi TT and Skoda Superb, to the SEAT Altea, to name but a few. 35 different versions are already exclusively available via the STREETEC online shop: http://www.null-bar.de/. Additional popular applications are already under development – for the VW T5, for example.

BILSTEIN is responsible for supplying the matching shock absorbers. Air suspension systems require extremely low production tolerances, in order to ensure the tightness of the connections to the air suspension spring that sits on top of the shock absorber. Sven Stutz of STREETEC explains the background to the collaboration: “BILSTEIN enjoys an excellent reputation among sports car drivers and ‘made in Germany’ is another quality statement for customers.” During the entire product development, STREETEC focussed on maximum driving pleasure and stability – the intention was never to create a purely “show suspension”.

Technically, the gas-pressure shock absorber supplied by BILSTEIN is state-of-the-art and uses a new Upside-Down mounting position, which ensures that forces are well distributed over a larger area, along with excellent torsional rigidity. Unlike conventional retrofit Airride solutions, it is also a mono-tube shock absorber. Compared to twin-tube shock absorbers, the effective piston surface is larger, in order to provide even greater damping force. Ron William Kiesewetter from BILSTEIN says: “Finally, the customer has integrated shock absorbers and air suspension using prototypes during test drives, in order to achieve a uniform overall package.”
